Building a legacy
In 2003, when the sounds of the guns became silenced and notorious Charles Taylor was taken to his new home; we collectively
opted for peace and freedom. Two years later Madam Sirleaf was elected as President of Liberia. Apparently, this is the beginning
of our journey to democracy. Therefore, in actual sense ‘Election 2011’ is designed to test her honesty and patriotism. If she scores
an honest A + then she is leaving a valuable heritage that the younger generation will build upon and lead us into the future.
Surprisingly, it seems that the validity of Election 2011 has been challenged. This is not a good signal; it suggests that the
foundation of our democracy is weakening if not crumbling. According to reliable sources our main opposition party (CDC) is
withdrawing from a fraudulent presidential election vote-count. If this allegation or claim is proved right then President Ellen Johnson
Sirleaf is building a bad legacy. Her story will be woven into the stories of other bad leaders. Simply put, she will be helping to
destroy the foundation of our new democracy. Remember, we all have sacrificed our time, resources and efforts to build the
foundation of this democracy. Therefore, it is our responsibility to sustain and protect it.
I am not asserting that this claim is valid or not valid, but what I am trying to point out is that the first “principle” of Liberal Democracy
must prevail. That is to say no one is above the law. If we are to respect this principle, the opposition claim must be taken to court.
The Supreme Court which is an independent body of the state will decide after a careful analysis of their claim.
